Intro to Ski Touring

Online: Evening of your choice for 2 hours

Field Days; Any 2 Back to Back Days in Rogers Pass

Wrapping up the field sessions by 3:30pm

What

Combined with an evening online session we will look at the fundamental basics of ski touring. From pre trip planning to the gear needed. I’ll set you up with a basic version of what we do as guides to set ourselves up for success on any given day in the mountains. This is a perfect course either before or after you have taken an AST 1 or 2 or else have been ski touring a bit with friends and want a more solid and structured plan for accomplishing your objectives. 

Who

Skiers or Splitboarders with strong intermediate skiing ability. Previous backcountry skiing is an asset but not mandatory. Good fitness, we will be skinning and skiing all day with up to 1200m of elevation gain.

Evening Session

Via Video Conference Platform. Ideally you will have access to a laptop for this session

  • This 2 hour session will focus on Pre Trip Planning. Along with Intro’s and a chance to get to know one another. 

  • What websites are useful for weather forecasts and avalanche hazard

  • Intro’s and Logistics for the Weekend

  • I’ll Present my planning system in regards to forecast weather and snowpack and apply that to terrain and group ability.

Day One

  • Today's focus will be on Trip Planning, Terrain Selection Track Setting, Fuelling Yourself Efficiently and Equipment. 

  • 6am Online Morning Meeting to finalize the days plans, check weather, avalanche hazard and permits. 

  • 7am Depart Revelstoke for Rogers Pass Trailhead of choice.

Day Two

  • Today’s Focus will be on refining the skills from yesterday and applying techniques such as Decision Making, Group Management and Communications. 

  • 6am Online Morning Meeting to finalize the days plans, check weather, avalanche hazard and permits. 

  • 7am Depart Revelstoke for Rogers Pass Trailhead of choice.
